tangeriner: Shatterstar, with his head tilted, looking at Rictor (ricstar: ric & shatty blur)
I've been trying valiantly to a) get rid of some clutter and b) unpack the last of my random boxes. I'm failing miserably at the former and succeeding somewhat at the latter. In unpacking a box that I thought was only comics, I discovered my "missing-presumed-gone" Buffy graphic novels, and some zines I had that used to belong to [livejournal.com profile] lucylooo.  I wasn't really ready to read the zines at the time, and for some reason I was convinced one of them was entirely about Space: Above and Beyond, which I really only know the title of and not much else.

That said, I finally looked at the aforementioned zine and noticed it was, in fact, a multi-fandom zine, and that the last fandom listed was X Force (no dash).  To which I tilted my head, and said out loud to nobody, "wait, my X-Force?"  and ended up reading a Shatterstar/Cable story, with some UST Shatterstar/Rictor floating around in the background.  It was quality, classic Shatterstar, and very firmly set in canon.

I'm actually sorry I missed the heyday of zines.  Most of them, admittedly, I couldn't have purchased, being under-aged at the time, but still!  I find them very neat.  I console myself with the knowledge that while I missed the zine thing, I used to buy fansubs on VHS from a guy in a black civic, outside a donut shop, in the sketchiest part of Scarborough ('burb of Toronto).  Fannish history is something I love very much.

Somewhat fandom related, I think I've finally settled on my cons for this year:
  1. Ottawa Comic Con (Ottawa, ON)
  2. Anime North (Toronto, ON)
  3. Otakon (Baltimore, MD)
  4. Otakuthon (Montreal, QC)
  5. Fan Expo (Toronto, ON) -- this one is a maybe, I wish it wasn't run the way it is
I still have a hearty list from the Snowflake Challenge, so one of those might sneak in this year, too.  I always stare at NYCC enviously.

So, I think I'm almost done with my first [community profile] trope_bingo square. I tried to write a semi-sweet Fuck or Die, and it's basically Julio being all "welp anything to help Star let's do this shit", awkward sex bits, then all the talking in the world from two guys terrible at talking. I wrote this one first, because this is pretty much how I expected it to go. Next up: Steampunk, because dammit, that's gotta be a short story, right? Maybe.

Also, the theme of the Moonlight Ball at Anime North this year is Steampunk, so I am for serious contemplating some sort of formal-ish steampunk!Terry gown, because I have a Terry-esque wig, and I can actually sorta kinda pull off red hair despite being a really dark brunette.

I've been reading Avengers Academy. It has not been exactly what I've expected. )

Also, bought the first season of Suits today. Already halfway through it because my leg is an absolute ass of unending referred pain right now, and I can only sit in a chair for limited amounts of time. Dear spine: you are cramping my fannish style, almost literally. Stop it!

X-Force 34

I'm back to re-reading X-Force. I got side-tracked when I had to re-read 100 issues of X-Factor for [livejournal.com profile] yuletide (such a hardship, I know). Tony Daniel is on art now, and he's really the guy who defines X-Force-era Rictor and Shatterstar for me. I'm up to issue 34 -- which is really one of the quintessential Rictor issues. You get Rictor's messed up family history and the glory of Shatterstar revealing he learned Spanish just so he and Rictor could secretly communicate. Guh, boys, seriously. (All the issue 34 stuff also makes it even more tragic when power-less Rictor in X-Factor starts using guns, waah).

I think, after X-Force, I'll re-read PAD's awesome first run on X-Factor (and possibly all of X-Factor, because tiny!Rictor shows up in, like, issue 17 and is so wee and little and traumatised). I've been keeping up to date with Kathleen David's blog (PAD's wife).  For those comic fans who may not know, Peter David had a stroke a little over a week ago, and she's been keeping the fans (among others) updated on his progress.

Then after X-Factor, I'll read the New Mutants, because I've owned the entire run for years and never actually read a single issue.  /confession

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you did not create. Drop a link to your post in the comments. See if you can rec fanworks that are less likely to be praised: tiny fandoms, rare pairings, fanworks other than stories, lesser known kinks or tropes. Find fanworks that have few to no comments, or creators new to a particular fandom and maybe aren't well known or appreciated. Appreciate them.

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you have created. It can be your favorite fanworks that you've created, or fanworks you feel no one ever saw, or fanworks you say would define you as a creator. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

So 2010 sucked.  Less said about it the better.  Had a pretty good New Year's Eve, tho.  Played Just Dance 2, and ate a lot, and drank a lot (so hungover omg).  All in all, a nice time.

But this is actually my 2010 fic round up post, because I wrote an AMAZING MIND BLOWING INCREDIBLE two stories this year. Yes, two.

For [livejournal.com profile] yuletide:

Stay
Final Fantasy XI.  Gen.  General Mihli POV.
General Mihli Aliapoh takes care of her people.
Written for [livejournal.com profile] dagas_isa

This story was uber fun to write, but I also learned I shouldn't venture into Halvung and Mount Zhaloym for Gadalar's cutscenes alone.  I think I walked every inch of those zones, thanks to the fact I evidently can't read.  I also needed [livejournal.com profile] placidia to come blow up trolls with me, because my Red Mage is a lame nuker. But I was overdue for some hardcore game bonding time, and MAN, those Serpent Generals are awesomecakes.  I lurve them all so so so much.

Posted at [livejournal.com profile] ricstar in an attempt to at least be able to say I posted one thing not-[livejournal.com profile] yuletide-related:

The New Man
X-Force.  Mature.  Rictor/Shatterstar.
Shatterstar finally reaches puberty.

It took me at least two years to write and finish this one.  I am so slow.  It's probably why I prefer writing X-Force-era for these guys over X-Factor-era, because I can't be jossed by Peter David.  I'm looking at you, thirty-page-story-I-can-never-post.  I am also impressed I was able to finish this story despite the fact I am still missing the J key on my laptop.  But if I hit the void where the J used to be hard enough, it does actually show up.  Most of the time.  :3

Maybe I will write more in 2011.  We shall see.
