Inspired by their debut project, Jackson is now working with Colossal to bring the ancient moa back to life through subfossil sourcing and genetic engineering.
On July 8, Jackson and his partner donated $15 million to the project.
The moa is an excellent choice for de-extinction, as it died out relatively recently and due to human misbehavior.

Weekend Plans
Jul. 11th, 2025 04:54 pmsettiaiI'm trying to get a bunch of things done before D&D tonight, including cleaning up the hotel suite. I still need to wash clothes this weekend, but I'm holding off on that until Sunday so that I can fit as many as possible into a single load since it's $8 to wash/dry each one.
My hope, however, is to get everything but that done today so that I can properly settle in and play video games all day long tomorrow. I keep saying that's the plan for the weekend, and then something comes up to prevent it, so I'm really going to try my best this time because I know it will help on the mental health front to lose myself in another world for an entire day.
I'm leaning towards Baldur's Gate 3, but I might go with Dragon Age: The Veilguard instead. Or even Mass Effect. I definitely think it's going to be something I've already played before, though, because something new-to-me requires a different headspace that I don't think I'm in at the moment.
We'll see how it goes, I suppose? 🤞🏻

Birdfeeding

I fed the birds. I've seen a mixed flock of sparrows and house finches plus a house wren.
I put out water for the birds.
EDIT 7/11/25 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.
I've seen a fox squirrel.
EDIT 7/11/25 -- Yesterday I collected 5 little pink crabapples while out and about. These are almost marble size, much more useful than the pea-sized ones. So I potted up those today to see if they'll sprout.

Note that our internet connection has been bad for well over a month. Sometimes it's down completely, other times things like Dreamwidth and searches won't run. So I'm losing a lot of work time and may only have access for half a day or less. Given this limitation, there's a higher chance of actually getting things written for prompts that use characters, settings, etc. that are already established.

I would like to separate books I've purchased from those I'm reading for free and will need to/be able to return. I'd also like to separate books I've read from books I haven't read, because going through the entire library every time I want to pick a book to read is a pain in the butt.

The Day in Spikedluv (Thursday, July 10)
Jul. 11th, 2025 07:08 amspikedluvMom suggested I not get to her house super early so I can get some stuff done, and we agreed that I’d stop in after my visit to my aunt. I returned home after I dropped Grant off at the garage and did two loads of laundry (even got one dried and folded!), hand-washed dishes, baked chicken for the dogs’ meals, vacuumed the bedroom rug, and changed kitty litter. Whew! That’s a full days worth of work for me!
I visited my aunt (she was awake! I showed her some pics of Midnight and Baby A – who is not a baby anymore! She starts pre-K this fall!) and hit the Price Chopper down there because the one I went to yesterday had zero bananas and none of the red grapes I like. I have them now. I got to mom’s about 10:15am and left at 3pm.
I stopped at the library on the way home to return a book (and talked to the librarian about it and the other series she recommended) and hit the bank drive-thru. I baked salmon for Pip’s supper, dried and folded the second load of laundry, hand-washed more dishes, and showered.
I finished the Duncan Kincaid book and read the next Inn at Holiday Bay cozy. (They’re very easy reads and kind of short.)
Temps started out at 62.6(F) and reached 86.4. It was warm out, but not as horrible as when the temps hit the 90s. We were originally supposed to have scattered thunderstorms but they never materialized.
Mom Update:
Mom was sitting on the porch for the second time when I got there. ( more back here )
