Jun. 4th, 2011 09:58 pmSo I've spent the last, like, two years convinced X-Men: First Class was going to be the worst X-Men movie ever. Which is saying a lot, because while I like 1 and 2 well enough, those are NOT my X-Men and I get annoyed when I think about it, and 3 was ... okay, from a comic nerd POV, 3 was okay with all the shout outs and random factoids, but the rest of it ... derp. :/
But! I am woman enough to admit I was wrong! X-Men: First Class was possibly BEST THING EVER.
Hell, I could even feel a fannish desire to write fic growing within me as I watched. And I will be a fandom of one, because hellz yeah, Havok/Banshee 4-evah! Darwin was a super surprise -- I really had no idea who was in this movie besides the obvious and Banshee and Havok. But Beast! The other Angel! A legitimately funny Wolverine cameo! I have too long a history with disliking both Professor X and Magneto to change now, but FOR ONCE, an X-Men movie gave suitable screen time to people I ACTUALLY LIKE. Wow! \o/
I also managed to identify Riptide earlier than I want to admit, after having ruled out every other elemental X-villain ever created. I'm embarrassed I recognised Azazel right off. Chuck Austen, why do you haunt me? And I have no idea how Nightcrawler is gonna be born since Mystique is totally <3 for Magneto, but maybe there is room in there for Azazel. Also, all villians should fight exclusively in handsome suits.
Minor complaint: Moira was not Scottish, and Banshee was not Irish.
And omg, can I wax poetic about Banshee again?! He was so great and adorable and gingery! And his costume, with the stripped wing-flaps. JUST LIKE THE COMICS OMG. And Havok, omg! The only one of the Summers clan I actually like, and I was soooooo happy they made it so that his powers were out of control and he needed his suit to help him control them. JUST LIKE THE COMICS OMG.
I finally recognised *my* X-Men in an X-Men movie. Twenty years of holding out hope paid off. \o/
