Challenge #8

Rec at least three fanworks that you didn’t create.

Ninety-Nine Yew Trees (34050 words) by Corvidology (The Professionals, William Bodie/Ray Doyle, E). A secret from Bodie’s past has come close to killing him. With Cowley refusing to accept his resignation from CI5 and Doyle turning his back on him, Bodie has fled to his bolt-hole in the countryside to lick his wounds and to try to work out what to do next.

-- I've been slipping into another Professionals wallow recently, and I tend to re-read my favourites first before setting out to find something new. (I have a rec list to devour from a previous Snowflake Challenge day). This is great h/c.

Exile (82964 words) by PR Zed (The Professionals, William Bodie/Ray Doyle, M). Infiltration of the IRA is never going to be the easiest of undercover assignments. When it also involves winning the confidence of Republican family members who have nothing but hatred and contempt for their ex-Army, ex- CI5, cousin, Bodie finds himself tackling one of the most dangerous missions of his career, leaving Doyle alone and hurt in London, and wondering if he'll ever see his partner again.

-- the vast majority of these recs are getting together stories. This one is not -- Bodie and Doyle are already together. The story itself really captivates me, and I'm a big fan of stories that deal with family, chosen or otherwise.

Arcadia (89908 words) by Sineala (The Professionals, William Bodie/Ray Doyle, E). To catch an unknown assassin, Bodie and Doyle head undercover on a cruise ship, posing as a couple. Aboard the ship are many people from Bodie's past, and any one of them could be their suspect. In the course of the investigation, Doyle discovers that there are a great many things he would never have guessed about Bodie's former life... and about his own feelings for his partner.

-- and last but certainly not least, this story is one of my absolute favourites in all of fandom. The undercover trope mixed with the cruise ship setting and the well-researched plot is basically everything I ever wanted in a story.

Salvage (20889 words) by kaasknot (Band of Brothers, Babe Heffron/Eugene Roe, M). Salvage \ˈsalvij\ (n): 1. A soldier accused of homosexual behavior that is judged fit for reclamation. 2. Something worthy of saving.

-- I read this last month without having any familiarity with the fandom, but after reading this, I bought the entire series and watched it in two days. And then reread this story, and it was even better.

As the Crow Flies (4499 words) by trillingstar (Y tu mamá también (2001), Tenoch Iturbide/Julio Zapata, M). They will never meet again. Just kidding. Now that would have been a terrible ending. No, the truth is that they see each other one more time.

-- from this year's Yuletide, the story written for me! I have a long standing love for this movie, in that I watch it every few years, while also accepting the ending isn't what my heart wanted. This story is what my heart wanted.

Give Yourself Away (10058 words) by rogueshadows (Y tu mamá también (2001), Tenoch Iturbide/Julio Zapata, E). They hurt each other a lot. They also meet again. "Life is like the surf, so give yourself away like the sea."

-- I read this story a few months ago, and it filled me with so much love for the movie that I haven't been able to stop thinking about it (see also: Yuletide). This is the first story in the series, all recommended.

Starborn (45282 words) by hafital (Marvel Cinematic Universe, Steve Rogers/Thor, E). As he walked, he wondered if sleeping through seventy years and then waking up to find almost everyone he’d ever known or loved gone was preferable to living through each loss. They both sucked, he decided, but he knew he wouldn’t have traded the last few decades for anything in the world.

-- I just really liked this one? Like, I can count the number of MCU fics I've read on two hands, but this one had me reccing it to random friends, because I enjoyed it so much. That said, please mind the tags on the story.

Cakes and ale (5147 words) by torch (From Eroica with Love, Klaus von dem Eberbach/Dorian Red Gloria, T). Klaus finds out what the road to hell is paved with, and Dorian refuses to wear a tie.

-- recced to me by a friend, I immediately fell in love with this story. From Eroica with Love is very much a comfort fandom to me, and this story did not disappoint. It's wonderful, and Dorian and Klaus are just so perfectly in character.

oh man, you should livestream/text your rewatch, that'd be aces (no pressure tho). hell, i should livestream a rewatch, i've been trying to come up with good BoB topics to post on :P

i'm tickled pink that gene is the first close-up we see in the show, basically the first face period, like every time i rewatch i have to pause and go "thAT'S MY BOY!" my second favorite part is in Last Patrol when everyone's panicking carrying on, then gene walks in and everyone immediately calms down. like, it's okay now, medic is here, we'll be alright. AUGH. i have too many favorite parts.
