Turns out I have an anime convention this weekend. I thought it was next weekend. Fandom Stocking situation looking dire, but more unlikely things have happened. Also, the convention has, like, five panels I want to go to. But at least I can practice my French? Maybe I will bring my laptop.

I had a dream that, on the way to Escapade, my plane had to set down in Bulgaria, and then instead of going to the convention, I just stayed and learned to farm. I have almost zero idea how this dream came to be in my brain, except I have been skulking about the Escapade website, excited.

I finally learned how to add borders to my icons using GIMP. So that's what I did last night. And then, feeling like the border-making wizard that I've become, I made a few new icons.

I've never seen the Yona anime (I should! But there's so much I haven't gotten to), so seeing the boys in color is always fun. ^_^

I sorta wish I could resist its siren song (I, too, have so much I haven't gotten to) but I just love it so much that I'll sit down to watch it and then, hours later, wonder why I'm rewatching Yona again haha. (I just love everyone so much!). I love them in the manga, but, yeah, something fun about seeing them in a full colour.

The entire main cast is so fantastic in Yona, and I'm glad to know the anime version is good--I love anime fiercely when it's done well, but so many times it's not a great adaptation and I get sad. (My favorite manga is Fruits Basket, and every time I think about the new anime version I'm both thrilled and mentally chanting "pleasepleasepleasepleaseplease don't screw it up".)

Does the Yona anime invent an ending of its own at all, or does it feel like something where it could be picked back up for another season sometime?

The voice actors were all perfect! And the soundtrack is INCREDIBLE. Jae-ha and Shin-ah, in particular, get amazing themes. I actually paid to get the soundtrack from Japan, and it took four months, and it's SO GOOD. (Fingers crossed the new Fruits Basket! I actually know very little about it, so this new series will be my first exposure. Excitement!)

The Yona adaptation is extremely faithful to the manga. It just... abruptly stops. There is no ending at all. Which is why I started reading the manga. I had to know more! My dragon boys! Zeno got his own OVA, which was also amazing (FEELS), but yeah. They didn't change anything from what I can tell. (Some of the Earth Tribe stuff from the manga wasn't covered, iirc, but that's it).

I remember some of the manga's sidebar notes about the soundtrack! I love it when mangaka are enthused about their anime adaptations.

(Fruits Basket is just breathtakingly good, and the old anime version was...cute? I liked a lot of things about it? But it had a terrible tacked-on ending and literally didn't even make it as far as the main story. My favorite character isn't even in the old anime.)

YES. GOOD. I mean, I know that's hard on the viewers, but so few invented anime endings work for me in the slightest--usually the best I can hope for is that it won't be actively bad.

I just checked to see where I am in the manga, and I'm up to vol. 19. (I'm always out of sync with just about everyone when it comes to manga, because these days I don't manage to read much other than the things I'm working on. So I'm always a few volumes ahead of the North American release but behind the people who're reading scans. ^^;)

I get the weepy feels listening to it, so that's usually my bar for measuring soundtracks haha.

(I had a friend really into Fruits Basket! Now I am determined to read it. I think I got the first volume out of the library, but failed to actually read it. I'm curious to know who your favourite is!)

Well, the abrupt ending keeps my hopes going that there might be more anyway. Someday. (I feel like the fandom is growing still? Like, I go to a fair number of conventions, and the Yona cosplay representation just gets more and more, especially at the various Quebec-located conventions I go to).

AND WOW! That sounds like an awesome job! I def buy all the volumes as they come out, so I have seen and enjoyed your work (and reread it often, because I just love this story so much, haha, and I'm determined to buy every NA-available thing I can). Ty for the added context. :)

(I am SO GLAD Fruits Basket is back in print, even though I, uh, haven't actually read the new version yet. [I bought the whole thing, of course, because FAVORITE MANGA, so now it's staring at me a bit reproachfully from its spot by the old Tokyopop edition.] My favorite character is Rin, and she's one of the very last key characters introduced, as you might guess from the whole "not in the first anime at all" thing. *deploys Rin icon*)

Ooh, Yona cosplay would have so much potential! ^_^ I'm glad people are doing it!

If you're in or not too far from Quebec, we're practically neighbors by Canadian standards--I'm in Nova Scotia.

Rewriting is a fun gig! I'm a freelancer, and I work on things for both VIZ and Seven Seas. It's not what you'd call super-profitable, but I like it a lot and I've gotten to work on some amazing things over the years.

(I'm this close to buying the entire run of Yona in French just because the covers are different and pretty, so I totally understand the FAVOURITE MANGA feels. I will keep my eyes peeled for Rin!)

I'm actually on the other side of Quebec, in Ottawa! I still think of Nova Scotia as being exceptionally close though!

I very much understand & respect buying beloved things in other languages for whatever reason! (I have the Russian editions of the first two Newsflesh--current primary fandom--novels because I love the cover of the first book so much. I speak not a word of Russian.)

At this point I have four full sets of Fruits Basket--one in Japanese, two sets of the Tokyopop edition (when they folded and it was all going out of print I wanted a "lending copy"), and the new Yen Press version. ^^;

Oh, yeah, Ottawa's not that far. ^_^ Further than I'll road-trip for a concert, but closer than Toronto (AKA the city of my heart).

scruloose and I lived in Toronto for two years right before we got married (so...2002-04), and I would've gladly stayed there, but their homesickness and my love of living there were about equal, and they also had the compelling point of "the smog gets into my lungs and I can't breathe". SHOCKINGLY, I prefer my partner alive.

So we go visit about once a year, and some years I manage to make a second trip up.

And haha, totally understandable! I mainly go now for major holidays and/or conventions. I've been in Eastern Ontario for over a decade at this point, and I'm probably here to stay (hellish winters and all!).

Aw, the one I know! A friend of mine did the adaptation for vol. 15-23, although before I knew her, and she's SO GOOD. (And the first of the Fruits Basket fanbooks was my very first adaptation job.)

Ottawa winters sound very upsetting. o_o But I'm not good at winter to begin with.
